Coincidence? I Think Not.

I can’t get enough of this story.

Lizzie Valverde and Katy Olson are in their 30s. They were strangers when they enrolled at Columbia University a few years ago. Lizzie is from New Jersey, while Katy had grown up mostly in Florida and Iowa.

Both of them dreamed of being writers – and were pursuing those dreams. While in a creative writing class, Lizzy shared a bit about her life. That’s when Katy had a near panic attack…because it sounded a hell of a lot like what she knew of her own life.

Sure enough, after what must have been one bizarre hallway conversation, the women learned THAT THEY ARE SISTERS! Born to the same mother who, as a teen, opted to put the babies up for adoption.

Can you imagine?! Think of all the events in the Universe that had to converge so that Lizzy and Katy could meet? My big question – and hopefully theirs – is WHY?

Now, I can hear the nay-sayers out there. It was just coincidence. A chance meeting. Not everything has a deeper meaning.

I don’t buy it. There are a million ways to live a life – and I’m choosing one with a little magic and meaning. What’s the fun otherwise?

This story has me thinking about my own hair-raising experience last week. I’d been thinking so much about my Granny Irene…about her looking down on me, protecting me, helping me jump over some major hurdles. Then, on Friday, I was looking for a lost key, moved my dresser out of the way, and there is a bookmark that Granny Irene gave me in 1995 with a handwritten note. The bookmark? Oh, it was all about…ANGELS!

So, enjoy the story of Lizzy and Katy in The New York Times – even just at face value it’s an amazing tale.

But if you want to join me in diving a little deeper, you might want to check out Coincidences: Clues from the Universe by Deepak Chopra. (It’s an even more amazing tale.)
