A message came to me in the middle of the night.
Happiness hangs on my answer to a simple (not really) question:
Is the world for me or against me?
Forget about finding happiness in a future-scheduled vacation, in a weight-loss program, or in a relationship. If I think that the world (God, The Universe, people, etc) is against me, then I’m sunk.
Now I’m not walking around screaming out conspiracy theories about the world being against me. But that “against me” sentiment is sneaky and has a soapbox inside my brain. It was last heard saying:
– Disappointment – Well, that was a flop. Why can’t things turn out the way I expect them to.
– Feeling defeated – If it’s not one thing, then it’s another.
– Anxiety – Things are going great. Something bad is bound to happen. When’s the other shoe going to drop?
– Distrust – Be careful. You don’t know who to trust.
The path to happiness is believing that the world is a positive, friendly place, and that all things are conspiring to give me exactly what I need to evolve and to learn. Even when the circumstances stink. Even when I am disappointed. Even when I am super tired.
Happiness comes when I accept the big “WHAT IS” without railing against it or making it mean something. It just IS.
Ok, now I can go back to sleep.
